Visitors to Port Elizabeth would do well to explore the newly renovated Pearson Conservatory in St George’s Park – assembled on site 130 years ago for the cultivation of exotic plants. The cast-iron structure, once close to demolition in the 1970s, has been given a R5.5m facelift that includes steel substituting rotten timber, thicker UV-protective glass replacing the old panes, a new drainage system and wheelchair-friendly access. The design and supervision of the project was undertaken for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality by The Matrix Urban Designers and Architects, and Professor Albrecht Herholdt. stgeorgespark.nmmu.ac.za
