A Cheese Platter For Autumn
Settle in for the evening with a cheese board curated to highlight autumnal produce.
There's something about eating an assortment of small, tasty items that appeals to most. Never out of style, a cheese platter is the simplest way to combine a multitude of tempting morsels and call it a meal. Loaded high with every type of dairy delight, from crumbly Stilton to the creaminess of an organic goat's cheese, a cheese board offers the best in show on any table it graces. While most commonly served with the addition of fruit, preserves and crackers, it’s easy to elevate the cheese board by adding one or two homemade treats.
In this case, it’s seasonal Beurre Bosc pears and Genoa figs – roasted in honey and thyme and served as an accompaniment to the oozy undulations of a ripe Camembert. Almonds, green olives and the tart bite of caper berries give the platter depth – along with a strong blue cheese served atop water crackers. Unctuously fatty coppa ham and an oak-smoked Boerenkaas bring autumnal flavour, with a crusty baguette at hand to better enjoy that aforementioned Camembert.

Honey-roasted Pears and Figs with Thyme Serves 4
4 firm pears, sliced into three sections
8 to 10 figs, halved
3 tablespoons organic honey
6 to 8 sprigs of fresh thyme
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Arrange the sliced fruit on a lined baking sheet and drizzle over the honey. Scatter over the thyme and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the fruit is soft and sticky. Spoon the figs over the Camembert and return to a 180°C oven for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Serve the roasted pears alongside a strong blue or Stilton.
