If you like the unusual or slightly eccentric, then you’ll be enamoured by these exciting newcomers to the local jewellery scene. Two birds with some stones is the handiwork of two talented Cape Town-based ladies, Stacy Adriaans and Jeanie Hugo Elliott – who refer to themselves as the ‘two birds’ in the brand’s name. Both designers are 2009 University of Stellenbosch BA Visual Art (Jewellery and Metal Working) graduates, and are already getting noticed with their innovative designs. Their self-described ‘hand-crafted, cute, quirky, eclectic, whimsical silver jewellery’ is concept-based and incorporates semi-precious stone and locally-sourced alternative materials into each piece. The girls say, ‘We absolutely love designing jewellery with a more humorous edge’, which shows in their out-of-the-ordinary jewels. ‘These treasures reflect our personal style, different backgrounds and life experience in individually produced ranges’, they add. Keeping things proudly local, the duo cites the Mother City as one of their biggest sources of inspiration. If you would like something specially made, they also offer an added commission-based service where they take your ideas, transform them into design sketches, and create beautiful masterpieces with whichever jewels you fancy. It’s this kind of bespoke approach that is already making them firm favourites locally. Prices start at about R80 upwards for their entry level products, while more high-end pieces range from R500 upwards. The custom-manufactured items will be priced according to the individual design.
