Think pottery-meets-illustrator-meets-Roald Dahl and you’ll arrive at the delightfully novel creations of Ymke Hemminga. An illustrator by profession, Ymke describes her art as “Trying to find humour in mundane daily acts, like doing dishes and groceries etc. Collecting and creating moments or items that evoke a grin or a giggle – I have to find humour in everything or else.” And giggle you will, guaranteed… Originally hailing from Waddinxveen, a village she describes similar to that of “Benoni-esque boredom” in the Netherlands, she fell in love with South Africa and one of its tenants after a traveling sojourn and moved here permanently in 2003. Her ‘doodles’ are inspired by people, their ornaments and inventions. They’re so distinctively delineated by contour and caption that one can’t help but swoon over their design. Ymke has recently expanded her ink and paper collection to include both linen and pottery in her empire. We couldn’t choose a single item for our pick of the day, so we decided to include a few of her treasures for your browsing pleasure! Her wares can be found in Johannesburg at Life Unplugged, Entropy and Objekt, and in Cape Town at The Pottershop, Clementina and Dot in Stellenbosch. Plates start at R130, teapots at R300, platters at R250 and the scavenger set (bowl, plate and mug) retails at R275.
