Just two years after its inception, the e-commerce platform Hello Pretty has grown extensively into South Africa’s leading design marketplace. Started in March 2012 by three friends, Sam Marx, Scott Hadfeld, and Adeline Levescot, together they created a website where viewers can browse and buy amazing handmade items, thereby giving exposure to little-known local products.
‘We found so many people making wonderful things, but a lot of the time no one outside of their city had heard of them,’ said Sam. Co-founder Adeline Levescot added, ‘It’s hard to gain recognition outside of where you’re based, as well as being time-consuming and costly’.
Hello Pretty gives small businesses and independent designers an opportunity to build and run their own online stores, enabling them to sell their products to both local and international buyers. The site currently consists of 750 stores and has some 10 000 products, including homeware, jewellery, custom artworks, body and bath products. If you are looking for a gift, or simply wanting to spoil yourself, why not support local South African artists and designers? For more info visit Hello Pretty. Text Claire Henderson
