For freelancers and small teams, co-working is an excellent option. It provides much-needed structure, the opportunity to network and, if you’re lucky, an unlimited supply of coffee… all without having to pay regular rent. Tapping into the increasing demand for co-working spaces in Johannesburg, two new spots have recently opened their doors, joining the ranks of popular shared workspaces like MESH Club, Nomads & Co and OPEN. We take a closer look at Jozi’s latest additions to the co-working landscape, namely Gathere and Better.
According to its manifesto, ‘Gathere is a co-working space, photographic studio, gallery and a workshop where like-minded people come together to collaborate and share ideas’. Situated in Kramerville’s Design District, close to the Sandton CBD and major highways, it’s easy and convenient to access. The space itself is airy and industrial, and offers a variety of seating options for those wishing to drop in daily (R200) or join as a monthly member (R2 400). It goes without saying that the two most important work tools – Wi-Fi and coffee – are freely available.
The gallery space is ever-changing, exhibiting local art and products, while the photography studio is available for both commercial and non-commercial shoots. Boasting beautiful panoramic views of Jozi, Gathere is available to hire for events, workshops, launches and brand activations. The business’ vision is to establish an ‘eco-system while growing and supporting [South Africa’s] creative community’, with the overarching aim of accelerating freelancers, entrepreneurs and business start-ups.

While Gathere is cool, industrial chic, Better is a decidedly more homely space – unsurprising, considering its location in an old home in Saxonwold. Its creators describe it as ‘a haven for people doing creative things for fun or money’ – an area to work, play, share and relax. Downstairs is dubbed the ‘noisy space’ and consists of a large, open-plan studio where you’ll be able to connect, laugh, share ideas and be inspired by watching creatives in action. The ‘quiet space’ is tucked away upstairs, broken up into a meeting room and a work room that are ideal for team brainstorming and getting important, solo projects done with a nice change of scenery, or simply a faster internet connection than you have at home.
Better also hosts regular events geared at the creative community in South Africa – some for free, others for a modest fee. Past events have included a writers’ tea, a colour-mixing workshop and self-care for freelancers. If you’d like to give this playful co-working space a go, ‘dabblers’ pay R150 per day, while the monthly options range from R550 per month for the ‘starving artists’, R1 200 per month for the ‘regular maker’ and R2 600 per month for ‘creative agents’.
