Every year there is an immense buzz around Mandela Day, the honourary day dedicated to the life of former president Nelson Mandela. The overarching aim is to celebrate his life and encourage others to mimic his good will in order to transform South African society for the better. This year, Mandela Day is being celebrated on Monday, 18 July, which will also mark the beloved Madiba’s 93rd birthday. Adopting the spirit of this all-important day is the Mandela Day Charity Cook-off, to be held on Sunday 17 July, in the atrium of the Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel & Spa in Cape Town. The event will highlight the hotel’s support of this momentous day, and will also see the 3rd celebration of the annual Ubuntu Festival, in which Capetonians join forces to applaud Nelson Mandela’s iconic status. The much-anticipated Cook-Off will see some of the top chefs from the Three Cities Group teaming up with members of the public to donate 67 minutes of their time to the cause. They will chop, slice, boil and bubble to produce tasty stews and soups that will be donated to shelters around the Mother City to help feed the hungry. If you’ve got some free time to spare this Sunday, we encourage you to head down to the Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel to lend a hand and make a difference. Call the hotel on 021-481-4000 for more details. You can also find out more about this significant day and other ways to contribute to the cause here.
