Shoppe is just what Durban has been waiting for – a beautifully curated space which is filled with the very best of South African designer homeware and accessories. ‘The idea for the store was born at Design Indaba,’ says owner Sonia Vosloo. ‘I was blown away by the design talent in South Africa but disappointed that, in Durban, we have very little exposure to the work of designers from other parts of the country.’
The space now occupied by Shoppe became available and Sonia promptly set to work sourcing the work of the cream of the South African creative crop to grace its shelves.
The result is a colourful, inspiring space which reveals Sonia’s excellent eye. The goods for sale include paintings and drawings by Durban artists Rene Rutgers and Terry Angelos, ceramics by Soetkoekie and Mick Haig, furniture by Koop and Recreate and pendant lights by The Shaw Sisters, Freshly Found and Moon Baskets. There are clear themes in the store – Mervyn Gers Koi ceramics, protea motifs in paintings, on mugs and rendered life-size in porcelain. Skulls also feature and many gents have commented that there are things in Shoppe which cater to their tastes, too. An interesting local product is the chairs by Evolution which are old school chairs given a new life with paint and decoupage to depict trends and South African scenes. ‘The chairs Evolution uses are sourced from local schools and 50% of the revenue from their sales in returned to the school to buy new chairs,’ says Sonia.
‘There is always new stock coming in,’ says Sonia, ‘so there will be something different every time clients come in.’ Who is her favourite customer, we asked? ‘An individual who is looking for something quirky for their home or that perfect gift for a friend,’ she says. With Sonia’s discerning taste and thorough knowledge of her products, Shoppe is the perfect spot to stop for a special something or a dose of interior inspiration.
Shoppe is at 40 Marriot Road, Morningside, Durban. You can call them on 082-626-6088.
