The only thing better than a great glass of vino is having a beautifully designed bottle label to appreciate while you drink it. Here’s a look at some of the labels we’ve been loving in 2015…
Ernst Gouws & Co
While the Ernst Gouws & Co Merlot 2012 (R95) and Nineteenfiftytwo 2014 (R105), a Bordeaux-style white blend, are worthy of attention, the new packaging, with just the right amount of bling in the form of copper foil, also deserves applause. The ‘circle of life’ implicit in the round label nods to the timelessness of the family-owned and -run brand, representing ‘unity and infinitude’. We like.
Stanford Hills Estate’s Veldfire range grabs attention not least for its reminder of the scourge of wild bush fires, scary but essential for fynbos regeneration. This Overberg farm has had its share, but the vividly illustrated label also references the Veldfire pincushion (lucospermum), grown here for export. And did we mention the Shiraz (R88) is brilliant to savour beside a somewhat tamer kind of fire?
It’s as minimal as you’d expect from a bunch of winemaking architects, but the starkly chic label for Black Block Wines allows the contents to do the real talking. Derick Henstra and Peter Fehrson of dhk architects, who share a life-long interest in wine, decided to make a Pinot Noir (R170) as it’s the ‘most intriguing cultivar, amazingly evocative and versatile’. We couldn’t agree more. Find it at Wine Concepts stores.
A new wine from Springfield Estate in Robertson is reason enough for cheer, but we’re quite obsessed with the packaging and story behind its just-released Miss Lucy white (R86), a blend of Sauvignon, Semillon and Pinot Gris. Featuring the endangered Red Stumpnose (nicknamed Miss Lucy) on the label, it’s a tribute to the ocean and the ‘many riches it offers’.
Franschhoek’s La Motte has introduced new packaging to its Pierneef Collection wines, which pay homage to the great South African artist whose works can be seen on the estate. Starting with the Pierneef Syrah Viognier 2012 (R211) and Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (R115), the labels feature linocut artworks with the title and Pierneef’s signature. Perfect for collecting and displaying at home.
These labels originally featured in our March, April, June, July & August 2015 issues.
