With 44 gourmet burgers and over 100 moreish milkshakes to choose from, Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers & Ribs is just the spot to visit for a fun ’50s-style meal in Cape Town. Part of the Slick Restaurant Group that also owns Belthazar and Balducci, Gibson’s was named by Eat Out as the Best Burger Eatery in the Western Cape last year. We paid a visit to the V&A Waterfront-based restaurant to discover why.
If you prefer a world where more really is more, you’ll love Gibson’s, which serves up everything but an ordinary burger. Try the Zola Gorgonzola with a healthy helping of bacon and Gorgonzola cheese, or The Mex-Tex, crowned with delicious melted cheddar cheese, jalapeño and guacamole, and served with nachos, salsa and sour cream. Other combinations include cranberry sauce and Camembert or, for something more tropical, a chicken burger with mango atchar and pineapple. There are plenty of vegetarian-friendly options, too, with lentil patties, falafel, mushrooms, and eggplant all featuring in a variety of tasty, meat-free alternatives. All burgers come served with deliciously fluffy thick-cut fries. And, for those looking for a low-carb treat, the Banting Burger is filled with cheddar cheese, bacon, feta and fresh avocado with a side of coleslaw, tomato and onion salsa and a cauliflower mash: you certainly won’t miss the bun.
As if choosing from more than 40 kinds of burgers isn’t challenging enough, you’re then left to decide which milkshake – out of 120 options – to try out. Caramel cashew, chocolate cheesecake, cinnamon doughnut, apple pie and cream, orange blossom and pansies and honey rooibos – to name a few. Then there’s the four supersized ‘freekshakes’ that come in their own irresistible flavours, including the classic peanut butter-and-chocolate combo. We went for the double-thick chocolate and orange-rind milkshake, which was perfectly balanced: decadent, but not too rich. For the health-conscious, there are also nine yoghurt shakes, including goji berry, avo and mint, banana and chai, and mandarin.
The menu doesn’t stop there, however. If you’re not in the mood for a burger, Gibson’s is also famous for its beef, pork and lamb spare ribs, as well as a variety of other meaty mains and fresh salads. Gooey chocolate brownies and ice-cream sundaes round off the menu sweetly. All these offerings are wrapped up in a playfully modern interior created by award-winning designer Adam Court of Okha, which boasts panoramic views of the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain. This is a must-try spot for lovers of American diner-style cuisine, so put on your comfiest pants and arrive hungry.
