Just as owner Sam Lurie’s design ethos favours the eclectic and the unfussed, so is her home an unpretentiously liveable space. She put her own spin on the Thesen Islands’ ‘colonial maritime’ theme: swapping horizontal for vertical cladding, painting the exterior beams with sealant, and installing an interior concrete slab flanking the staircase as a nod to Knysna’s industrial past. Instead of vast expanses of glass, tall, narrow doorways provide glimpses of the patio, lawn and waterways outside. It’s an indoor-outdoor creation that celebrates all things beautiful and South African.
