We’ve had our eye on Brak furniture for a while now, and when we saw this new, stylish room divider, we knew it was time to go and catch up with the team for a chat. Brak is a local furniture design company, based in Johannesburg. The duo, Wolfgang and Zoë, design and custom-make all their own furniture, as well as upcycle some classic South African pieces.’Our philosophy is to be a little less serious about furniture’, they told HL. ‘Furniture, especially in this country, has become very clunky, raw and masculine, and we want to bring a lightness and femininity back to it.’ Influenced by mid-century modern design and old-school South Afrikana, their retro-inspired furniture is both functional and playful.
‘Kiaat is our wood of choice as it has such a rich colour, and is very reminiscent of 1970s South Afrikana,’ says Wolfgang, while adding that it also goes really well with their colour range. This bold sense of colour, elegant lines and a touch of humour are the trademarks of Brak’s designs.
‘Furniture can be fun and playful too, and we definitely try to incorporate these elements into our pieces.’
All their furniture is hand-made to order by Wolfgang and Zoë, and can be custom-made to suit your space. While the price of bespoke furniture usually keeps it out of reach of most fans, this is not the case with Brak.
‘As you can see by our prices, it’s important to us to keep our pieces affordable.’ For this reason, their furniture has a wide appeal among young home-makers.
‘Generally speaking, so far our clients are either young(ish) professionals, or people who work in creative fields. But we’re definitely planning on extending our reach,’ says Zoë.
The Cube Room Divider pictured retails for R3 750, but can also be made to size. For a quote email firstname.lastname@example.org.
