Between Home and Wisdom is a special collaborative design and fine art project that began when designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik met with Italian fine-art photographer Tommaso Fiscaletti and Design Afrika’s Binky Newman.
The project involves two aspects:
Creating unique handwoven Zwazwa bags designed by PICHULIK and woven by Du Noon Urban Weavers, and an exhibition of Fiscaletti’s documentary photographs in Cape Town. The exhibition will document the process of creating the Zwazwa bags, exploring the challenges that the weavers face in needing to balance their spiritual vocation as sangomas with their day-to-day township life in Du Noon.
Funds are currently being raised for the exhibition in Cape Town. A total of £2 300 must still be generated by 22 April in order to hold the planned exhibition on 7 May 2015. £1 747 of the required £4 000 has already been raised though Kickstarter.
The photographs will be for sale at the exhibition and a percentage of the money raised will go to the community of Du Noon.
Pledges start at £5. A £10 pledge comes with a limited-edition postcard and anyone who pledges £40 will get a signed copy of the limited-edition book Fiscaletti is creating for this project. What’s more, each donator’s name will go into a draw to stand the chance to win a PICHULIK neckpiece to the value of R2 500!
