Wolfgat, recently acclaimed as the restaurant of the year, has earned yet another accolade: it is one of TIME Magazine’s Greatest Places for 2019.
Wolfgat On The Rise
Since its opening just over two years ago, Wolfgat has made a global name for itself and continues to regularly win awards and accolades.
Headed up by talented chef Kobus van der Merwe, the restaurant's approach to cuisine focuses on utilising indigenous ingredients found in the coastal area of Paternoster.
Wolfgat's signature 'Strandveld food' menu is served over seven courses in the form of a tasting menu that features herbs from the on-site garden and seaweeds from the local rock pools, among a range of sustainably sourced ingedients.
Operating within a 130-year-old ex-fisherman's cottage, Wolfgat also houses an authentic sense of the small village of Paternoster’s history and appeal. The award-winning restaurant is located close to the Wolfgat cave, a site of archeological and geographical importance. (During a survey of the cave, sheep bones and ceramic remains dating back 2000 years were found.)
Serving by appointment only, the restaurant caters to 20 diners per sitting in order to maintain the sustainable ethos that influences everything that happens at Wolfgat. Reservations can only be made via the Wolfgat website or on Dineplan.
Featuring on the TIME Magazine Greatest Places for 2019 list and being placed in the ‘To Eat’ category is the latest milestone for this acclaimed restaurant. TIME explains that choosing the Greatest Places of 2019 was no easy feat and that during the judging process, multiple characteristics were taken into consideration.
'How does one measure the greatness of a place – in miles covered, dollar spent, or visitors captivated? Such metrics can play a part, but also important is something that many travellers asipre to experience: the sense that one has stumbled upon the extraordinary,’ says TIME.
Nominations across various categories were submitted by industry experts, editors and globral correspondents. Each nomination was analysed based on originality, sustainability, quality, innovation and influence.
Wolfgat took to social media to share their excitement in receiving acclaim from this global publication.
Other notables in the category include Under, located in Norway, which is Europe's first underwater restaurant! The entire TIME selection included just 20 restaurants worldwide.
