Recognised for creating an outstanding and positively memorable tourist experience, the Wine & Food Tourism Award winners were each rewarded with a trophy at the Wine and Food Tourism Conference on 18 September 2019.

The awards were handed to representatives of the winning properties by chairperson of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, Blacky Komani.

Tourism expert Margi Biggs says of this year's winners, 'That the group the group of nine included both veterans and newbies is very encouraging. It reflects the ability of our well-established tourism providers to refresh, renew and remain relevant, while at the same time showing that there are newer players capabale of competing to the highest standards.'

The aim of the awards is to encourage members of the industry to continuously improve their standards and training, along with facilitating confidence among the industry's members. According to the organisers, this year's contendors for the awards are a showcase for the increasing quality and resilience in the local tourism sector – from businesses offering wine tastings to restaurants and accommodation.

A panel of judges comprised of industry experts determined who the winners would be, and included Sheryl Ozinsky, co-founder of the Oranjezicht City Farm and tourism specialist, and Su Birch, a wine marketing specialist, among others. The panel was chaired by Jean-Pierre Rossouw, publisher of Rossouw's Restaurants and Platter's South African Wine Guide.

Overall, the winners included a mix of well-established local favourites as well as a few hidden gems.

The panel awarded 'three of the best' in three categories: Service Excellence, Authentic South African Experience and Innovation.

Service Excellence was awarded based on providing a truly person-to-person experience; Authentic South African Experience reflects uniquely South African people, places and moments; and Innovation is based on an experience that excites and delights guests with a new offering.

Biggs says of this year's competition, 'We were delighted by the calibre of entries in this, the first year of our awards. We hope they serve to provide a benchmark to which the growing number of participants in the industry can aspire and, in this way, encourage the numerous businesses in this tourism sector to better their efforts.'
