Where To Celebrate Garden Day

In celebration of spring, Garden Day South Africa takes place on 20 October 2019: here's our top pick of the day's events across the country.

Garden Day | House and Leisure

Garden Day SA is celebrated across the country and is a welcome chance to spend the day out in the garden, planting and pruning with family and friends. With the sun out and so many flowers in bloom, it's a day to remember all the pleasures of unwinding in nature. 

In short, whether you are planting in pots on your patio in the hub of the city or tending to your roses in the suburbs, Garden Day SA is an opportuntiy to hone your green thumb.

If you aren't going to spend the day in your own garden, there are also plenty of other options out there.

First off, you can feel like a king or queen at free flower-crown stations in Joburg and Cape Town, which will be taking place on Saturday 19 October between 12pm and 4pm.

Johannesburg 

The Herb Farm Bistro Garden Day Picnic 

Celebrate Garden Day at the Herb Farm Bistro in Midrand with a picnic on their idyllic grounds. While away the day on the grass as you listen to live music on the baby grand piano. Book in advance for a picnic between 11am and 2pm, and the bistro will add a free bottle of Theuniskraal Wine to your basket.

Picnic baskets cost R550 per couple and are filled with cold meats, cheeses and iced tea.

Oxbow Country Estate Garden Day 

Visit the thriving grounds of Oxbow Country Estate and they will take you on a gudied tour of their organic gardens, followed by a delicious roast lunch.

Cape Town 

Garden Day at the Norval Foundation 

The Norval Foundation is celebrating Garden Day with free entry to their Sculpture Garden. The festivities will cater to the whole family as there will be a hosted treasure hunt, a drumming session and more. Visitors are advised that only drinks and food purchased within the Norval Foundation will be allowed on the garden grounds.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch University Botancial Garden

Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden will be celebrating Garden Day by offering free entry into its grounds.

Visitors will also have the chance to pick from a choice of free indigenous seedling packs on the day: simply hand in a pamphlet to the Botanical Gardens store and claim your free seed mix or natural pest control and pollinator mix.

Montagu

Montagu Museum Herb Festival 

South Africa's first ever medicinal herb festival will be taking place at Montagu Museum in Montagu, and there will be a range of market stalls, demonstrations and speakers.

The festival aims to pay homage to local Khoisan people, with their rich knowledge of harvesting local herbs. Running over three days, there will be guided hikes available inot the Donkerkloof area that will give visitors an inside view of the grounds in which the museum's herbs are harvested.

And if you are in the mood to savour the fruits of the museum's labour, a three course herb-inspired dinner is taking place too.

The event will also include the launch of the museum's new Herbal Remedies book, and there will be guided tours throughout the museum and its herb garden on offer.
