HL Preview: Design Joburg 2019

Design Joburg is in its third year and is already an annual highlight on our design calendars. Here’s what we’re looking forward to at the show in 2019.

Already one of the highlights of SA’s design calendar in just its third year, Design Joburg featuring Rooms on View presented by Sanlam Private Wealth takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 24-26 May 2019.

Design Joburg Highlights 1: CoLabs curated by Tonic Design

Curated by creative directors Philippe van der Merwe and Greg Gamble of Tonic Design this year, Design Joburg will be featuring nine of their fellow designers in the popular CoLabs element of the show.

This will once again see designers creating collaborative room sets using the wares of some of South Africa’s top-drawer brands, artisans and suppliers.

The stellar line-up includes Dylan Thomaz, Noks Nxumalo, Lindie Ferreira, Fanie van Zyl, Tuami Zulu, Nelson Kubheka, Julia Day, Wendy Douglas of Douglas & Douglas – House and Leisure is proud to be the media sponsor of Douglas's CoLab stand – and Andrea Graff.

Design Joburg Highlights 2: Kohler Design Forum

Another highlight will be the Kohler Design Forum, an auditorium space that will host internationally acclaimed designers as well as local and continental leaders in the industry. All will be sharing their insights around the theme of ‘Experiential Luxury’ in a series of not-to-be-missed talks and presentations.

We’re also looking forward to:

1. Checking out Cube

Created in conjunction with SA Tourism, Cube will present established and fledgling creatives from multiple disciplines, showing their wares within cubes curated and designed by Source IBA.

2. Exploring the new Art Corridor

In the new Art Corridor, several leading galleries – including White River, Candice Berman, World Art and Artvault – will be showing new work by their artists.

3. Shopping the Retail Corridor

Located in the very heart of the show, with a larger contingency of brands on board (think KARE Design, Dark, Time Brandits, Culinary Equipment Company and Ilve) this will be the place to stock up on decor accessories, kitchen supplies, lighting, clocks, ceramics and more.

Afterwards, take a breather in the Hendricks Gin Bar, this year designed by one of our Joburg faves, Studio 19.
