William Kentridge

When we saw William Kentridge’s latest series at the Cape Town Art Fair, we couldn’t hold back our excitement. Printed on handmade paper with Indian ink, this new series of linocut prints is entitled Rebus. Initially, the project started as a collection of drawings in 2013, aimed at portraying how images are able to transform. The process soon progressed, as Kentridge explains: ‘… They changed from drawings to cardboard cut-outs and from cardboard cut-outs into three-dimensional cardboard sculptures, which could, when turned, transform from a fruit bowl to a cone, from a megaphone to a square; hieroglyphs, of sorts, in which an invitation is extended to the viewer to make sense of the nonsense — and what is offered is not a natural interpretation, but rather the possibility of sense. There is an invitation to make our own rebus from the elements, a narrative sentence from the different pieces.’ The Rebus linocut series featured here came about after the sculpture phase. This limited edition series (of which 30 are available of each print) are printed at Artist Proof Studio. Artist Proof Studio is situated at 3 President Street, Bus Factory, Newtown Cultural Precinct, Johannesburg. Contact them on 011-492-1278, email or visit for more information.
