Five Museums To Visit From Your Couch

You can’t be out and about right now, but you can still get your dose of arts and culture with these virtual museum tours.

With the majority of the world currently being homebound, Google has launched a website dedicated to providing more than 500 virtual tours of museums and galleries across the globe.  

This means that we’ll all finally get to tick some must-visit museums off our bucket-lists, and from the comfort of our own living rooms. Penciling in one of these gallery tours is the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning exploring the world - without ever stepping a foot out of the door.

Here are our top five picks of must-see virtual museums and galleries


1. Johannesburg Art Gallery 

Showcasing the largest public collection of modern and contemporary art in Sub-Saharan Africa, it is no surprise that this local art gallery has made it to the list. Established in 1915, the gallery has a long-standing history in South Africa’s arts and culture scene.

The virtual exhibit will showcase the work of talented Mary Sibande, a solo exhibition by photographer, Richardt Strydom, and more.

2. MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art

Devoted to the modern art, MoMA provides a wide and rich range of contemporary art. Currently, the gallery is home to over 150 000 paintings, sculptures, drawings and other pieces.  Notable pieces from their collections include Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.

Explore the work of artist and designer, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, a multi-talented artists, Sophie is well-known for exploring techniques that focus on decorative arts and design. Her work is considered to be one of the most important contributions to concrete art and geometric abstraction during the 20th century.

3. The Palace of Versailles

Although it’s not literally a museum, The Palace of Versailles is home to some of the finest art pieces from the 17th century and the building itself is a work of art, epitomising the Rococo period. Take a virtual tour of several different exhibits and rooms showcased online where you'll be able to view oil paintings and sculptures as you take a virtual tour of the opulent château.

4. The British Museum

Home to a number of world-famous objects such as the Rosetta stone and Parthenon sculptures, The British Museum is a perennial favourite among museum lovers. An interactive tour of the museum spans through the ages, as users are able to view work dating back to AD 2000.

5. Van Gogh Museum

Heralded as one of the greatest artists of all time, Vincent van Gogh’s largest collection of works is housed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Home to more than 200 paintings and 500 drawings by the world-renowned artist, there are two exhibits available for online viewing.
